Update a range of cells in excel spreadsheet from Access

I want to use a VBA program in Access to update a series of ranges in a
series of sheets in a series of workbooks in Excel. It's not much data, but
the ADO update method doesn't work, and I don't want to export the entire
sheet back to the workbook if I can avoid it.

all of it applies to Access and VBA too.

It needs updating, however, to reflect the fact that with the latest
Office XP and 2003 service packs and updates it is no longer possible to
use ADO or DAO queries to update a worksheet (see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/904018 ).
