Update after detect/repair?

Does anybody know for sure:

Is it necessary to do an Office Update after doing a detect and repair on
Office 2003?

In other words, if detect/repair determines that a component needs to be
replaced, where does it get the component from - the installation media/on
disk CABs or from already downloaded updates that have been stored on disk?
If the component file(s) come from the media, then it would follow that it
would be a good idea to do an Office Update to make sure that the machine is
fully up to date. But if the file comes from already downloaded updates,
then doing an Office Update wouldn't be necessary.

The following article from the MS KB suggests that components are replaced
if detect/repair can't find the proper Registry entry, but that doesn't mean
that the files used are the most up to date:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822238/en-us

If Office Update is required (or prudent) after detect/repair, how does
Office Update determine whether an update is required - does it scan
individual components/files or does it look for previous update logs?

If it looks for previous update logs, how do you remove/reset them, forcing
a full Office Update?

Or is all of the above worrying about nothing?
