Update an open Project Plan from the Project Server Database

We use Project Professional 2002 and Project Server 2003.
We have a macro when called from an open Project collects values from
various sources and populates them in Custom field.
Our trouble starts now. If the Project Plan is not saved after the macro is
run and reopened, the custom fields values are shown in the Plan. However, we
have not been able to find a way to retrieve these values from the DB with
the Plan kept open.
Any suggestions ?
