Update Catalog cannot be displayed.

I have a Toshiba 480CDT laptop running Windows Me and Excel. Used only for
on the day golf society scoring/handicaping purposes. Hasn't been used for
some time so knew needed updating. Running Office update required
installation of latest update engine. Subsequent scanning failed indicating
that the Office Update Catalog cannot be displayed. with further comments
indicating the site is currently experinecing technical difficulties and is
unable to check for updates. I've tried again as suggested but still fails
at 89% complete. I've removed Excel (2002) and lo and behold with no office
app installed update site works or at least is accessable. Obviously I
didn't require any updates. Re-install still fails. Un-install and install
Excel 2000, same result

Can anyone help resolve ???

Thanks for replay, Info useful but unfortunately has not resolved the
problem. I will try each one again and should it be successful I'll post
back result
