update check

Arnoud

Hi,
I've installed both service pack for office 1 and sp2.
Neverthelless when i do a update check (for latest
updates) it returns with 2 missing updates for Word en
Outlook. I expected that these where covered by the 2
office service pack. What is the best way to deal with
this and how can i be certain to have the latest updates.
Perhaps someone can explain this to me. Thanks.

Microsoft is constantly releasing updates to address issues with their
products. These issues can include software bugs, security holes, etc. They
constantly test their software, and get feedback from the user community to
this end.

These updates come in the form of Hotfixes, Patches, and Service Packs.

A good way to think about it is this: Hotfixes and patches are the fixes
that are released on a regular, as-needed basis (i.e. when an security hole
is found that needs to be addressed ASAP). They are meant to address a
specific issues or set of issues, for a certain configuration, etc..

Service packs generally come along a few times a year. They are more broad
than hotfixes and patches, and they address many issues, instead of just one
or two. When Microsoft releases a Service Pack, generally all previous
hotfixes and patches are incorporated into the Service Pack.

What it appears might be happening with you is that there are additional
hotfixes and/or patches that have been made available since your latest
installed service pack. I would allow the install (If you're in a corporate
environment, and could potentially affect hundreds or thousands of users -
obviously it's a good idea to test first).

Staying on top of update issues can be daunting. Depending on your windows
version, there are various ways to set it up to run automatically. Check
your documentation, or post a message to the appropriate OS group.

If you need any more help, let me know.

good luck
