Update didn't install

I got a copy of Microsoft Office 2003 for Christmas. After the installation
I was directed to Office update where it transpired I needed two updates,
KB828041 and KB832333. The updates were duly downloaded and at that point
the update procedure failed without any explanation. I've repeated the
procedure a few times with the same result. I would be grateful for any
suggestions.

Hi Susan,

"Installation failed" or "unsuccessful", I forget which. I have now
downloaded the updates manually and installed them successfully.

After I did this, I received the tip that I should make sure the Office
Source Engine service is set to Automatic (Control Panel/Admin/Services).
This I have now done (I found it had been set to Manual) in the hope that it
will make future updates run smoothly.

From the newsgroups it is clear that many people are having this specific
problem going back to at least October and hopefully Microsoft will issue a
fix although it is difficult to see how people could download it if the
updating procedure is broken.

Hi, Walt,

Glad you got it working.

Actually, yes, the problems are well-known by Microsoft; they've detected
the failures and have also heard about them from the MVPs. One very quick
fix is that, beginning with SP2, they're making the fully-downloadable
patches available as a default, which is causing fewer problems for people
(except for the bandwidth-challenged, such as me <g>).

In case you're interested, here's a bit more detail:

833365 - The download size of Office XP Service Pack 2 on the Office Update
Web site is larger after December 16, 2003:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;833365

The smaller binary patches are still available for people who can't deal
with the large downloads. Those have tended to cause more problems, plus
they require the source installation media, which is a problem for some
people, as well, but it's at least an option.

Hope that helps--

I'm having the same problem. I have the student/teacher
version. Is that the same version you have?
