update doesn't work

I am using Office X v. 10.1.6. I downloaded updater to 10.1.9. It
successfully installed, but "about Entourage" still says 10.1.6.

If Office has been updated successfully, you should see the following
version numbers:

Entourage: 10.1.6
Excel: 10.1.9
PowerPoint: 10.1.9
Word: 10.1.8
Microsoft Component Plugin: 10.1.9

An Office update does not necessarily update every single component of an
installation; Entourage relies on several components inside the Office
folder, and if these components get updated, then Entourage's version number
does not reflect this. To be completely sure about this, see if the
Microsoft Component Plugin (in Applications/Microsoft Office X/Office) is at
10.1.9; if it is, then you are running the latest version of Office v.X.

Not every app gets changed during an update. It's a common, if not
universal practice, to update only the version numbers of files that
have changed. Much of the functionality of Office exists in the
supporting libraries.

However, you can always find out what version you've updated to by
checking the version of the

HD:Applications:Microsoft Office X:Office:Microsoft Component Plugin

file.

Another issue is that starting Entourage with option held down doesn't
access the rebuild database dialog. This has only happened since I
updated my computer to g5 iMac very recently. Any thoughts will be
very appreciated.

Do you have an Apple keyboard? Is the Option key working as expected with
other applications? Have you restarted and run Repair Permissions?

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage.

The combo update installer updates Mac OS X 10.4, 10.4.1, 10.4.2, 10.4.3,
10.4.4, 10.4.5, 10.4.6, 10.4.7, or 10.4.8 to 10.4.9.
