I am in the same case: Win XP Pro SP2, Office 2000 Pro; OU (Office Update) aborting with http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/FX010404541033.aspx "Office Update is unable to check for updates".
So I visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304498; but it proposes 13 different methods, asking to try each in turn until one works. And these "advices" start like this:
- the 1st "advice" is to delete all IE cache and cookies (i.e. about 1GB of valuable data built and selected through weeks/years of surfing - typical reckless "advice" endlessly years-repeated by flat brain automated gurus; in 2007 one would think such advice would have disappeared...);
- the 2nd is to install a script that has lengthy explanations and processes to WGA-validate, download and install it, but not a bit to tell what it does - leaving users wonder what damages it will do;
- the 3rd again "advices" users to delete entire folders - which in addition don't exist on my PC;
- and so on for another 10 "advices".
IOW, this process is trying to cure a benign annoyance (final "updates" to piece of software that, being 7-years old, is quite mature, little used, and causes no problems) with applying an awkward and heavy pack of "remedies" which essentially add probable big annoyances for an improbable improvement of something that already works.
Conclusion: better leave Office Pro 2000 alone, wait for Win XP or Office Update getting fixed, and meanwhile don't try tweaks to workaround the normal process.

Subject: Problem Updating Office 2000
I am using Office 2000 on a Win XP SP2 machine. Everything is 100% genuine Microsoft software.
The progress bar of Office Update reaches 40% and then aborts.
The error message says that a possible cause is that I do not have Administrator privileges (I do!).
I have tried reinstalling Office 2000.
I have tried disabling my antivirus software (Norton AntiVirus), but it does not help.
Has anybody else run into this problem and found a solution?
Thanks.
