Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

I purchased and registered Office 2008 and set it to auto-update alert. Every day I get a message to update to version 12.0.1, but once I download the update & I try to install it I get a message that tells me that I "cannot install Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume". I do have version 12.0.0 installed. What is going on?

Hi,

that I "cannot install Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update on

is going on?

You're not the first one in this situation and I don't know what's going
on.
All I know is that you can force-install the update using Pacifist
(shareware).

I got hit by this issue myself and had to uninstall then reinstall
Office before the updater accepted to install again.

Maybe a simple restart would have cleared the situation, but I had other
issues going on so uninstalling was actually probably the best option
for me,

Thanks for the answer. Bummer! Having to uninstall and re-install is not fun. I'll wait and see if anyone can shed more light to the issue.

Since you seem to be a regular here, you may know if one can ever actually reach MS tech support or whether this is an exercise in futility!

I could be wrong, but I thought someone reported that they ran a simple
re-install over their install (without removing), and then the update
worked. Test at your own risk--normally that's not advised, but since
the worst-case scenario would be that you have to then Remove Office
(using the Remove tool), I'm not sure what harm it might do.

You won't reach MS tech support here. You get two free calls to tech
support with the purchase of Office 2008, I've heard.

Thanks for this information. I shall try uninstalling. I downloaded Pacifist as Corentin suggested and installed it, but it did not help.

You will have to use "Remove Office" and re-install. Follow the directions
here:

You have probably spent more time trying NOT to do this than the actual
procedure takes. :)

Thanks. Simple things turn out to be not so simple. You would think that a giant like MS would not cause such problems. I'll take the time to do it later. I appreciate your help.

Sometimes procrastinating helps. Microsoft released a new installer today.

MacBu released a new installer for the Office 2008 Update 12.0.1 today. This
is not new Office bits to be installed, but the installer itself that was
changed. This change was a result of problems experienced by some Office
2008 users having a failed update to 12.0.1. If you are one of the
unfortunate few that had problems, this patch is for you. If you were able
to successfully update to 12.0.1 then you do not need this patch.

Continue reading for steps to properly update Office 2008 to version 12.0.1.

Well it looks liek MS tech found what the problem was. THere is now
online a new installer for the 12.0.1 update.
