Update field looping question

I have a table Statistics with a new added field called RecNum. I have sorted
the table by date ascending so the oldest date is in the first row of the
table. I want to update the RecNum field starting with the number 1 in the
first row. The outcome would be that the oldest date in the table would be
RecNum: 1 and the newest the highest number. Can someone show me how to do
that ?

Try making the RecNum field an AutoNumber data type.

I had tried that. I get a msg that you cannot make an autonumber field if
information has been entered into the table and I have records already.

Thought I'd go ahead and enter numbers manually and found out, that in XP
version, that if I sorted by date descending and started entering numbers
that the records started numbering the field automatically. I believe it must
have something with identification of the records record number.
