update field

Hi,
I'm working with a 5Mb document with figures, tables,
captions, endnotes and such that came from a template that
I created which has new styles that I use for captions.
When I automatically update using CNTL+A then F9, I lose
all of my text. Even when I automatically update one
caption by selecting it, right clicking, and clicking
update field the same thing happens. What can I do?

Hi cody -

I'm not sure quite what you mean by losing all of your text, nor how you
have set up captions using new styles, but at a first guess I think you may
be typing text within a field, over its value. When you update the field,
the value is updated, which will overwrite anything you have inserted.

If you use Tools > View to show field shading, you may be able to see better
what is going on.
