How are you attempting to update and what happens when you do so? We can't
very well tell you *why* if you don't tell us *what*:) Do you have an
active internet connection - what type of service? It would also be useful
to know what version (complete update level) of OS X & what kind of Mac.

Auto update. automatically and manually. It says "The installer could not locate the correct version of the software required to install this update. See the readme file included with this installer to determine if your software meets the requirments for this update." I have an active internet connect- college ethernet. Mac OSx 10.4.10 and a macbook pro

It sounds like something in your Office 2004 installation is missing and
that's why the installer is balking. You didn't give us your current
version (including update level) of Office so it's hard to see where things
might be breaking down. Try this...

Go here:
-81E1-71A048106429&displaylang=en>

Download that update (11.3.5) to your desktop and try to install it. If the
installation is successful, then run auto update to get the subsequent
updaters.

If installation is unsuccessful, you'll have to remove and reinstall Office
2004. Do it properly! See here:

Ok, we'll need a little more information:

In your MS Office 2004 folder you'll find a folder called "Updater Logs" -
take a look & tell us what you find. Additionally, in the same folder you'll
find another named "Office" and in it is a file called:

Microsoft Component Plugin

Select it, Key Cmd+I (Get Info) & see what version it currently states
include that info when you post back. Also, which specific update are you
trying to apply?

Did you have any other versions of Office installed prior to 2004 -
including the Test Drive?

In the meantime you might try running Disk Utility - Repair Disk
Permissions, restart your Mac, then d/l the 11.3.5 update directly from here
& see if it will take - Just click the appropriate language version:

If that works you should be able to handle the additional updates (11.3.6 -
11.4.0) by way of AutoUpdate.

I'm afraid Remove/Install is most likely a waste of time. There is probably
a solution but I can't hazard a guess without complete answers to the
questions asked in my last reply.

jumping in here, as I am having issues with the update process as well,
and just read this post.

In my own situation (Mac 10.4.11, intel iMac, Office 2004), after
applying the 11.4.0 update, and despite the readme stating I should see
11.4.0 for each app version (I don't), I looked at the Installer Log
File, as you suggested the OP does, and mine has only one block of entry
bounded before and after by:

Wednesday, 13 December 2006 6:00 PM Beginning installation.
Installer
Type of Install: Easy Install

(content)

Wednesday, 13 December 2006 6:04 PM
The installation is complete.

so the progressive updates 1133/1135/1136/1137/1138/1139/1140 would
appear to have not recorded anything in the would be 'Installer log'

I missed the op initial post and it has now expired, but has any pointed
out to them that the updates are necessarily progressive?

Sorry Chris, but No, I suggested no such thing. I specifically referred the
OP to the *Updater Logs* as clearly indicated in the quoted part of my
message contained in your message.

The *Installer Log* is a completely separate & distinct folder which only
contains installation info, no update info, nor any indication of which
components are affected by those updates.

Further, the Readme says no such thing re the applications - it explicitly
indicates that the files rendered as 11.4.0 are:

<quote>
3 Updated files

This update adds or changes the Office application files **shown in the
following list**. After you install the update, you can compare the version
numbers of these files to verify that they were installed or updated. To see
the version number of a file, select it in the Finder, and then on the File
menu, click Get Info. Additionally, you can find the full installation path
for each updated file by reviewing the updater log file in the Microsoft
Office 2004/Updater Logs folder on your hard disk.

File Version
Microsoft Component Plugin 11.4.0
Microsoft Entourage 11.4.0
Microsoft Framework 11.4.0
Microsoft OLE Automation 11.4.0
Visual Basic for Applications 11.4.0
<end quote>

There's absolutely no suggestion that Word, Excel, or PowerPoint - which are
not **shown in the... list** - should gain any such version number.

You're more than welcome to "jump in" but please get your facts &
information straight before you do. Further, according to the info in your
post the updates have gone well for you - you simply aren't looking in the
right places or at the right things for confirmation. The OP, OTOH, has not
been able to install *any* updates & receives error messages when attempting
to do so, which is a totally different & unrelated situation.

Additionally, the sequential nature of updates is implicit in their
numbering scheme and the pre-installation requirements state the previous
update level required for each one.

I also have no idea what you mean by the initial post having "expired". It
was just posted on 6 Mar, is still in the thread & will remain so
indefinitely as archived even after it is no longer active - which will be
months down the road.

Please see my post of Friday, March 7 in reply to your second message from
Thursday. Also - take a look in the Word menu> About Word & include what
version info you find there.
