update for Office 2002/XP

Hello, I am running Office 2002/XP. When I visit the Office Update site and
use the update tool to list available updates, the site says under Required
Updates:

Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (English version)

plus a bunch of security updates for 2002 programs.

Since I'm definitely running Office 2002/XP and not running Office 2003 on
this computer, why does the update say I need a service pack for a program
I'm not running? (I do run separate copies of Office 2003 on two other
machines I have)

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi Paul,

Check in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel for any 2003 series products. You may have a trial version, or a viewer,
for example.

Hello, Bob. Thank you for your reply. In checking as you suggested, I have
found that I have the PowerPoint Viewer for Office 2003 installed as well as
the Office Resource Kit 2003. I cannot recall specifically, but I don't
think I would have installed either of these unless I had seen that they
worked with Office XP as well. I also have Front Page 2003 installed, but
that was purchased as a separate program, not part of any Office purchase.

I would assume that these are the sources of the Update engine saying I need
SP2 and that it would be incorrect to try to apply this service pack. I
suppose what I should do is just uncheck the SP2 and let the program
download and install the security updates that are specifically designed for
Office XP/2002. Would that be correct? Should I uninstall the PP Viewer
and/or the Office Resource Kit? I will leave Front Page 2003 in place.

Thanks again.

Hi Paul,

The Office 2003 Resource Kit is only applicable to Office 2003 products and is a manual download and installation.

FrontPage 2003 shares DLL and other core files with other Office 2003 products so yes, it will trigger installing the Office 2003
Service Packs as applicable as they update common files.

Hi, I'm a little confused; are you saying I should install the service pack
so that Front Page will be updated?

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Yes. Service Packs for Office are by product series. So the Office 2003 Service Packs apply to FrontPage 2003 as well.

In addition to the Office product series service packs, the individual apps may also have individual updates to install. Often
those updates will require that an Office service pack be already in place.

One of the updates for Office 2003 did include an update for Front Page.
