I got an error code of 4397 when trying to update my 2003 ver. of Office, and
the update will not download. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to
solve this problem? Thanks in advance if so.

I received the same error message, the application it is trying to install is
for PowerPoint. I have not been able to locate a solution for it yet.

Is this PowerPoint or the PowerPoint Viewer?

I get the same error code 4397, when rying to install a Security Update
KB956500, for PowerPoint. Since I don't have PowerPoint installed, and only
have the PowerPoint viewer installed, perhaps that's the reason it will not
install. Do you have the PowerPoint program installed?

I also get the same error code 4397 again and again and again.. as Windows
Update tries to make the "important"update KB956500 to my PowerPoint viewer
2003. I have Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2003 on my computer. I am running
Windows Vista Home Premium.
The first Update failure I can see in the Windows Update history was on 15
August 2008. There were a whole bunch of updates that day including
KB951072, KB951618, KB952287 Updates for Windows Vista.
The Windows Update error message has the following explanation underneath
4397:
"Windows can't update important files and services while the system is using
them. Save any open files and then restart the computer."
I don't have nay programs running when I try to do the update manually.
When the system tries to update automatically it does so when my computer is
shutting down.

I found a solution to this problem in another similar discussion ("Windows
Update Vista Code 4397" in microsoft.public.windowsupdate).

The solution is to install MS PowerPoint viewer 2007 using:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...40-14e1-467d-8dca-19d2a8fd7485&DisplayLang=en

I did this and I now have MS PowerPoint viewer 2007 as well as MS PowerPoint
viewer 2003 on my computer. Windows Update no longer pesters me continually
to install the update for PP viewer 2003 - even though the Update history
shows it never actually successfully installed the 2003 update..
