Update illustration references when adding illustrations to docume

I have "figure" numberings in my document. I can insert additional graphics
and update the numbering automatically, but my references in the text do not
update. How do I add this functionality? There are more of these "updates"
to do then the illustration numberings, there must be a way to accomplish
this, yes??

I can update the fields under the illustrations, but F9 does not update the
references in the text - how can I convert these to a field type that updates
along with the illustration references?

Have you used Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to insert the
cross-references?

No, I took over this document and that has not been done. I have tried, but
unable to get the "For which caption" field to populate with the Figure
Numbering. The numbering is currently set up as a SEQ numbering. I have
been unable to set this up, can anyone tell me how this SHOULD be done
properly to avoid the nightmare I am currently looking at with over 245 bad
references throughout our documentation now?

If the captions were created using Insert | Reference | Caption, then the
caption label would be available in the Cross-reference dialog. It is a
total mystery to me why you can't use { SEQ Figure } fields and accomplish
the same thing, given that that is exactly what the Caption dialog does, but
this is one of Word's bits of behind-the-scenes magic that only it can do,
apparently.
