Update KB892843 results in no email

Update KB892843 was successfully installed on my machine. I use Norton
Internet Security. At this point, I can neither send nor receive email. I
have disabled Norton and I still cannot access email. Eventually after trying
to send or get mail, I get a 0x8004210B error.

Gail,

I just tried to update this - it dowloaded but in my case, it could not
successfully be installed. I had the same problem with KB907417 update - used
ListTool to fix the problem, which worked, but not sure if it will work on
this update.

If anyone's got advice on this it would help us as well as others. It gets a
bit old when Office 2003 updates keep having glitches.

Just to note, I am not sure if this is a MS or Norton problem. I've had this
problem before. The November 2005 update resulted in me not being able to get
email. Then I found a recommendation from Symantec to disable Norton to get
mail. In December I found a Symantec document which I followed and which
got my email working again without having to turn Norton off. Today, I found
what seems to be the same document (#2005020123585136) only it had today's
date (1/11/06). I followed the same steps, but I was unsuccessful. I also
tried disabling my Norton Internet Security 2005 with Spyware. It didn't
work. I am running Office 2003 PRO.

I had the same problem. I disabled the personal firewall and restarted
Outlook. It worked. As soon as I enabled the firewall my email was blocked.
Symantec's suggested restoring the firewall rules to default setting. This
did not work for me. I finally had to reinstall NIS 2005 to resolve problem.
Make sure that in personal firewall configuration that you have your
outgoing and incoming address (POP3) entered in the trusted zone. The last
security patch did the same thing and when I added email address the problem
was resolved but not this time. I hope this helps. Good luck.

jjclark, thanks for the suggestions. Your suggestions, other than reloading
NIS, were pretty much what was in the Symantec document 2005020123585136. I
did go back in and put in my incoming and outgoing addresses (again). That
was unsuccessful.
While I've been searching for a fix, I did notice something I don't remember
seeing prior to the latest MS update. I now get an icon which stays up in my
start bar which indicates that Outlook is synchronizing folders. I dond't
know anything about what happens in the background with folders being
synched. (I try to keep my inbox emptied-either I move fail to other folders
or I delete the mail. )

Thanks

I don't use Outlook for my e-mail, but AOL. I have Norton Antivirus and
McAfee Virus programs on my PC. Just seems that every time there is a
Knowledge base update there are problems installing it. All other Office/MS
updates were installed fine.

don't know what the deal is...

In response to Sheryl: Yes I did disable NIS and I was not able to receive
email. (I used the disable "method" (recommended by Symantec for an earlier
version of their software (great idea turn off the security when you may need
it most)) between Nov and Dec of 2005. In late Dec, I found the Symantec
document which solved my problems until this latest MS upgrade.)

For Sheryl, I am using Outlook to access my email. For the time being, until
I find a fix, I will be viewing my email from my ISP's website. So at least I
can access my email.
