Update kb952142 Won't Install

The Vista "Problem Reports and Solutions" feature notified me that an update
to Office was available. It was identified as kb952142 at the Microsoft
download site. "Installed Updates" in Control Panel did not list it as an
installed update, so I downloaded it
(outlook2007-kb952142-fullfile-x86-glb.exe) and attempted an installation.
The update initially does a verification. The verification fails with a
dialog box message: "The expected version of the product was not found on the
system." The title of the dialog box is: "Update for Microsoft Office 2007
(KB952142)".

That product most certainly is on the system! "Programs and Features" in
Control Panel lists "Microsoft Office Professional 2007". (Besides, I use
Outlook. I know what's installed on my system.)

How can I make this update install?

Very interesting! But it didn't completely answer the question. In fact, the
end result of this investigation is simply a different phrasing of the
original error.

In brief, the "How to investigate ..." page shows you how to generate a log
file and how to search that log file for details about what went wrong. When
I did that, I discovered that the install crashed at:

OPatchInstall: The property 'PACKAGE.PATCH.DETECTION' is equal to
'InvalidBaseline'
OPatchInstall: Evaluation of the condition complete, the result is true
OPatchInstall: Executing the IfTrue list
OPatchInstall: Setting property 'SYS.PROC.RESULT' to value '17031'

Looking this up in "Error codes for 2007 Office update packages", I get

Detection: Invalid baseline = 17031

and the further description:

"This code indicates that the version of the Office installation does not
match the version that is expected."

Again, I ask, "Why?"

My system does have Outlook 2007 installed as part of Office 2007
Professional and this install is not in the installed updates list. (If I
read the pages above correctly, a different error would display if it was
already installed anyway.)

Did you have a Office Trial installed at any time? Did you use the Retail Product
key to activate and convert the Office 2007 Trial ?. Was Outlook upgraded from a
previous version ? and if so which one ?

I certainly can't recall having an Office Trial installed. Nothing like that
shows up in installed programs. I installed Office from a Launch 2007
Resource Kit. I have it here. It doesn't say anywhere that it's a trial and
the Office applications still work fine. (As noted, I only embarked on this
quest because Vista Problems and Solutions told me there was an update I
should install.)
