Update Linls problem

I'm using Excel 2002 and I have a main workbook that was
linking to several other workbooks. I recently changed
the location of the several other workbooks and cleaned up
the syntac of the links in my main workbook. For some
reason when I open the main workbook now I get N/A errors
when I hit update links. But if actually open all of
the "several workbooks" the links work. Is there a way I
can get my update links button to work again so I don't
have to open my source files everytime?
