Update locked template fields

I have inherited a template and I need to update the locked/protected fields.
How do I do so without recreating the whole thing from scratch? How do I
unlock the template (.dot file)? The document itelf isn't protected, so I
don't know what else to look at.

Create a new document and insert the contents (Insert/File) of the protected
template.
