Update Mergefields into new document

Hi all
Word 2000 SP 3
I have a Word template with fields related to an Access query
(The Access query finds the records corresponding to the user's Windows
Login using a GetUserName function)
I am updating my word template fields automatically using MailMerge.Execute
I do not find this satisfactory since
1°) I end up with two generated documents:
-one will be based on my template but with no fields updated (which I am
actually closing without saving)
-the other will be the result of my mail merge operation with the correct
information.
2°) I'd rather get the username from Word but then I can't figure out how to
update my fields?
Can somebody help me achieve this?
