update "microsoft office document imaging"

L

Leonthewolf

I find Microsoft Office Document Imaging to be one of the more useful
features of Office since it provides just the amount of OCR that I need. But
the version on my desktop is:

1.03.2349.1

And the version on my laptop, which is only a little younger, is:

11.0.1897.0

Althoguh the desktop is more powerful than the laptop the laptop runs MODI
far more efficiently and I presume that is because of the later version.

How do I upgrade my desktop to the latest version of MODI. I find it
impossible to get useful information about this anywhere.

The version on your laptop is Office 2003 supplied version. I don't know
what the other one is but it first showed up in Office XP(2002). What
Office software is installed on the desktop PC?

The office software on my desktop is Office XP professional version 2002.

Thank you for your comment thus far. Getting any useful information about
MODI is very difficult. People seem to ignore it. Yet, for me, it is far
more useful than Omnipage Pro which I also have since I do not need to OC R
large documents just very small sections of large documents.

I agree. Omnipage is a drain on one's financial resources. I upgraded
to Version 15 (omnipage15) and it never worked for me. I couldn't even
activate it never mind doing anything useful with it!.

It took me about 7 months to get a refund because there argument was I
have already installed it once. My argument was that I have not
activated it so the software is useless an not fit for its intended
purpose. I threatened them to sue and surprise surprise they refunded
me in full - plus all shipping costs!.

As to your requirement, I suggest install Office 2003 on your PC (and
laptop) and this should give you state of the art imaging software. You
are allowed to install Office 2003 on at least two systems (the retail
version) or three systems Student & Teachers edition. OEM is only
allowed on one system it is installed on and that is it.

Many thanks to Bob I and Anonymous (the latter name seems somewhat familiar).
You have been very helpful. There is just one more detail I would like to
know.

Can I install Office 2003 over Office XP professional 2002? I imagine the
answer is yes. If it then works as well on the desktop as it does on the
laptop I shall be entirely satisfied.

The main problem with the 2002 version of MODI is that, with large
documents, it is slow to start. Once it does the first recognition it is
fast for the rest of the recognitions for that document but waiting for that
first OCR can take an age (geologically speaking). When you open another
document it is slow again for the first recognition.

The 2003 version is fast from the very beginning. Yet I have never seen
this particularly problem described anywhere - except by me. Maybe it is
because all those millions of internet users who do OCR use bloatware. I
have tried increasing the page size - which worked for a short time then it
reverted to the same speed - and increasing the RAM to 3.5 Gb which gave no
appreciable advantage over 1 Gb so I am back to about 2 Gb of RAM since I did
not know what to do with all that extra RAM.

I do wonder why MODI is not promoted a bit more. Perhaps it is because they
want you to upgrade to Omnipage (which is what you get when you press the
upgrade section in MODI). On the other hand, I am afraid that, if it gets
too popular, they will take it out of Office and we will be stuck with
over-powerful programs like Omnipage.

Yes you can install over Office XP and you get the option of keeping the
old one on th system. Office 2003 is all lumped under Microsoft Office
(Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office) while Office XP programs are all
lited separately. Both versions can run from the same system. Ideal if
you FrontPage in the old version - the new version doesn't come with
FrontPage 2003 unless you buy ir separately. I have bought FP 2003 and
Visio 2003 professional with Offic 2003 Enterprise Edition. The only
thing I don't have is OneNote 2003 but I hardly use it anyway!

Omnipage's days are numbered. They have instituted activation system
like Adobe and Microsoft without realising that their products are not
necessary for everybody. I am surprised you didn't know but Office 2003
also has a scanning program and Windows has a FAX program. For most
people, Microsoft is all they need!! I work in a university and so we
need to have all commercial applications for the benefit of students.
We are not allowed to recommend (or take sides) any one program as we
get special deals from all software manufacturers - sometimes free.

Just letting you inow that the suggested solution worked perfectly. I
purchased a copy of Office Professional 2003 and, after installation, was
able to confirm that the version of MODI on my computer was now 11.0.1897.0 -
the same as on my laptop (the earlier version on my dersktop was 1.03.2349.1
which would probably be old enough for the Hittites to have been using
(although there was no cuneiform option).

It now works just the same and more quickly than my laptop. So that was the
problem all along. I should have consulted you fellows a long time ago.
Thanks very much.

I have not tried the other solution - the other imaging software - but will
keep that in case it is needed.

Good to hear it, you're welcome. Have a good day.
