Update MS Office XP problems

M

Meroland

I have upgraded from Office 2000 Pro to Office XP Standard. Now I have been
having conflicts between outlook and word as my editor. I have also had some
conflicts with the Global template in Word, in that I am continually asked to
save/change the global template.

I have gone to Microsoft site and scaned for updates of Office. I am soon
prompted for the 2000 Pro CD, I insert and continue and end up with an
unsuccessful update.

Why is there continued conflict with Outlook and why is my update of Office
not taking? I feel like the upgrade to XP wasn't completed.

Hi, Meroland,

When you upgraded, there were some Office 2000 applications left over
(perhaps Access?) because there isn't a replacement for it in Office XP
Standard. If you look in the Windows Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs
applet, you should see what Office programs are installed, both Office XP
and Office 2000.

Office Update automatically detects all of these and attempts to apply
updates to them. You should use the Office 2000 CD when prompted to insert
a CD for its updates, and use the Office XP CD when prompted to insert its
CD. It sounds like you did that. If the updates for Office 2000 were
unsuccessful, and you still want to keep whatever Office 2000 components you
have, then you might want to post back with the actual updates that were
attempted by Office Update, and specific wording of any error messages you
receive from those unsuccessful attempts.

If you want Office 2000 to be completely removed, perform an uninstall of
all of its applications from the Windows Control Panel. You will need your
original CD for this. (Keep in mind if you have Publisher or Project or
Visio or FrontPage, those will also be updated by Office Update; they are
part of the Office family).

As for the Word / Outlook issue, could it be that you still have two
versions of Word installed? A mismatch of Word to Outlook versions can
cause some problems when using Word as the e-mail editor in Outlook because
of inconsistency in the versions. Again, do an uninstallation of Office
2000 from the Control Panel, and make sure you remove Word and Outlook
previous versions. Then you may need / want to run your Office XP
installation again.
