Below is a posting I just made to the newsgroup. I have an update.

One remedy appearing on support.microsoft.com is to make the proof folder
not be read-only. The machine won't let me do that. FYI

Hello:

A user on Windows XP (possible sp2) and Outlook 2002 is not able to add a
word to the dictionary during spell check. The button to add the word to the
dictionary is grayed out.

Does anyone have a remedy for this. I do not have this problem on my
machine and have the same specs, though I do not have sp2.

And if he goes into Tools...Options...Spelling and tries to open the
dictionary to add the word directly, he gets a browse window trying to find a
some sort of file. I don't have this problem on my machine, either. So,
this option is not a workaround or a solution to the problem.

Thanks!!!

Don't start new threads for the same problem. Post them as replies to your
previous thread.

What do you mean by "won't let" you? What happens when you try?

When I go back to check the attributes again after making the change, the
folder/file is still marked as read-only. it's as if the machine is saying
"sorry, no can do"

So, I take it you get no messages of any kind. Is there anything in the
Event Log?
