update path:filename footer

J

I would like to have a footer with a path:filename that updates if I
save as another filename or to a different directory.

I know of 1.5 ways to add the information to the footer:
I can add the path:filename to a footer by using
insert:autotext:filename and path.
I can add the filename by insert:field:filename. Is there a
field for path?

I can't figure out how to get this information to update. Do I have
to delete the footer information and re-insert?

Thanks.

Hi John,

The FILENAME field (Insert|Field > Filename) supports the '\p' switch, which adds the path to the field results.

There is no means of getting just the path via a field, though.

It isn't a separate field... You need to add the \p switch to your FILENAME
field:

{ FILENAME \p \* MERGEFORMAT }

To update. Control/Right-Click the field & select Update Field. You can also
set the print options to automatically update when printing.

Hello, macropod - fancy finding you lurking about here:) Since you brought
up the possibility that the OP might not want to display the file name -
about which you are certainly correct - but he can select the filename in
the footer & format only that portion of the string as Hidden.

Hi Bob,

Nice try, but you can't format part of the output of a filename field and expect it to remain that way once it's updated ...

Dadgummit - I swear it worked yesterday, but I only tried it once as a test.
I just tried it again & it held for the first update of the field but the
second update blew the Hidden attrib off just as you said.

Oh well, back to the drawing board:)

Hi Bob,

I suppose you could place a white autoshape over the filename to hide it, but that seems overkill.

Yeah - especially if the path changes... The bugger will start to peek out
from under the edge of the shape.

Not if it's left-aligned. It would then only be at risk of peeking out, or hiding part of the path, if someone changed the filename
or the font used for the field.
