Update required for not installed product?

I checked for Office 2003 updates and was adviced to download and install
something for the junk filter of Outlook. I don't have Outlook installed (use
another e-mail program), so the update -completely understandably- failed.
What I fail to understand is why I get that advice when I don't have Outlook
installed. The upgrade service claims to inspect the installation and should
notice a complete lack of Outlook.

Hi A.P.,

The Officeupdate engine looks at the *product*
you have (MS Office) and lists updates for the
entire product, not for currently installed features
only. Otherwise, if you were to choose to change
an installed feature set after updating you'd have
an installation that might need updating to continue
to run correctly, but the updates are opyional.
