update task start dates to reflect today's date for tasks that have not begun?

Hello:

(I cannot seem to Google the answer to this simple question. Apologies if
it's an FAQ.)

I have a non-critical task #123 with no predecessors, set to begin on
January 1st, with a constraint to finish no later than January 30th. On
January 15th, when I open up Project to update progress, that task has still
not begun.

What is the best practice recommended way to ask Project to update
everything, so that my printout I take to the team members reflects that
task #123 will actually start somewhere between [today] and [finish no later
than], assuming that's still possible?

In essence, I want Project to update scheduled start dates to reflect
reality.

Is this a feature I'm overlooking? I know I could manually change the start
dates, but I would rather that Project updates them everywhere. Resource
Levelling doesn't seem to factor in today's date. Should I change the
project start date to today?

(An example of what task #123 might be is "Buy pens and pencils" for my new
business. There's no real predecessor to buying it, it's not critical, it's
not high priority, it's just another small task that is finish-to-finish
with the overall project.)

Thank you for any help.

If no progress was reported on a task during the last reporting period, then
the task should be rescheduled to the current reporting period. Here's how
to do it:

1. Select the task that has no progress from the last reporting period
2. Click Tools - Tracking - Update Project
3. Select the "Reschedule uncompleted work to start after" option
4. Enter a date one day EARLIER than the start of the current reporting
period
5. Select the "Selected tasks" option
6. Click the OK button

If you wish to apply this process against the entire project, select the
"Entire project" option in step 5. Hope this helps.

Hi MarkR
What Dale suggested is correct.
Can also select the task in the std Gantt view and click
the "Reschedule Task" icon (from the Tracking Toolbar).
Takes the date up to "Current Date" - which can be set at
the end of the previous reporting period eg last Friday in
Project/Information.
I suggest representing current date as a line in the Gantt
by -
- right click in Gantt chart
- select Gridlines
- Select "Current Date"
- Select a suitable type and color
- OK
This gantt view is very handy to work with when updating.
