Update where index allows duplicates

I'd like to update a table in which the index allows duplicate records in
Access 2007. The source data for the table is refreshed monthly and doesn't
contain attributes that would allow a unique index to be created. I'd like
to avoid having Access assign a primary key, but will consider if that is the
only option.

Any insight would be appreciated.

You have five records with identical key values.
You want to update one of them.

How can Access determine WHICH of them you want to update? (The telepathic
interface won't be released until 2018 <g>). For that matter, how can YOU
tell, looking at the data, which is the desired record?

In short - if you'll be updating a table, that table MUST have a primary key
or other unique index. No options! This could be a field in the existing data,
or a combination of up to ten fields in the existing data, or an autonumber...
but Access must be able *somehow* to unambiguously identify which record is
which.
