I've read several postings about users trying to apply
the Service Pack SP1 to Office-XP Pro or MS-Word 2002 and
getting stuck when the updater stops and asks for a file
called DATA1.MSI. The problem is that DATA1.MSI is no
where to be found on the Office-CD dispite what
the "experts" say. I had the same problem, and after many
tries, I eventually got it to work. I don't know how or
why I got it to work but I'll tell you exacty what I did
and you can give it a try.
1.) I searched all the postings that had DATA1.MSI in the
message body and read them all. One message stated that
a web site described a way of installing the Service
Packs by "Creating and Administrative Installation
Point". Here's the web site:
http://notorious.dezines.com/notorious/articles/xpsp1.htm
I followed their step-by-step instructions but got stuck
on step #4.1 when I didn't have a different file they
required called proplus.msi. I have know idea what that
file is or where you get it. I searched my CD and
Harddrive and couldn't find it just like DATA1.msi So
I'm still stuck.
2.) I decided to go to Microsoft's specific web page that
describes the Service Pack SP1. Here's the web page...
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=D4D8A9A4-31FC-480B-9CD9-
ADCCB6997CE3&displaylang=EN
I downloaded the SP1 update file from THIS web page, and
guess what...IT WORKED this time. The updater didn't ask
me for DATA1.MSI. Go figure.
I have three theories on why this worked. Keep in mind
that I have know idea of what I'm talking about.
A.) The SP1 download file on the Microsoft link I gave
above is some how different than other Microsoft pages
that list the same download file. (Far fetched I know)
B.) Going through the "Creating and Administrative
Installation Point" procedure, albiet only part way, did
something that allowed the SP1 update file to now install
properly.
C.) There is a file on the Office CD called DATA1.CAB.
My guess is that DATA1.MSI is burried in this CAB file
and something was keeping it from being extracted
properly.
