updated footnote cross-references

Can anyone tell if if footnote cross-references should
automatically update when you add additional footnotes to
a document?

I've found that adding new footnotes before the cross-
reference doesn't alter the cross-reference number to
reflect the fact that the footnote it now refers to has a
different footnote number.

Lloyd,

The cross-reference field is dynamic and will pick up the change when the
field is updated. However, the field will not automatically update as you
add new footnotes. If in Tools>Options>Print you have 'update fields'
checked, it will automatically update when you print the document, along
with all the other fields in the document. Or you can manually update it by
right-clicking it and choosing 'Update field'.
