Updated Microsoft Word 2004 for mac and now can't open saved docs

I recently updated my microsoft word 2004 for macs and now I am unable
to access older and some new doc files with my word program. The pop
up says that the doc is being used by another user. Has anyone had
this problem and what is a way to rectify this?

You've missed an Apple update.

Go to the Apple site and re-apply the latest combo update for your operating
system.
