Updated Office XP - now Word & Excel files wont open

updated Office XP Pro and now Word states that files are
unavailable (its on my desktop) and unable to read Excel
files (which it did right before the update).

Please help!!!

I've got the same problem! I'm pi$$ed as he77! I usually trust Microsoft when they say I need a "Critical" or "Security" update but this one has me shut down until I can find a solution. I even tried doing a system restore and it didn't undo the damage. Isn’t there some way to uninstall a Security Patch

I scanned through a bunch of older posts and found that similar problems had occurred with earlier Office Updates and the conflict was with Norton Antivirus. I had already uninstalled Norton Antivirus and replaced it with PC-cillin Internet Security but there were still a bunch of files in the program Files folders. I deleted those folders and now everything is working again.

So, the problem is a conflict between NAV and Office. I hope this helps you out too, Andy.

Damn NAV! Even after it's uninstalled it creates problems! Why the he77 can't MS and Symantec get together and coordinate to reduce the countless conflicts the cause for each other.
