I recently upgraded the office PCs to Word 2003 from Word XP and now some of
the users are receiving the following message:

"Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges."

The files are located on the Novell drive, but I've checked and verified
that they are given access to the folder so I think it's got to be something
in the new Word.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Matthew,

You may want to repost this is
microsoft.public.word.application.errors, because the group you posted
in is a Word for Macintosh group.

Make sure the user name has read/write AND Remove privileges to both the
file folder the document is in, and the server's temporary directory.

When Word does an Open or Save, it performs a Write and a Rename and a
Remove (delete) operation. If your directory permissions are set wrongly,
this will fail.

The reason it's hitting only some users is probably that some have
Tools>Options>Save>Always make backup set to ON, and some have it OFF. It
changes the sequence in which Word performs these file operations.

The other thing you may want to check is your network cards: the old
DOS-mode network cards sometimes do not correctly interpret the messages
coming back from the server and issue the wrong error. It may be the
document's attached template file that is outside their jurisdiction, or the
printer last used by the document.

Cheers
