Updates and problems - XP

When I downloaded SP2 updates, I encountered several
problems - printer stopped, keyboard stopped. I am afraid
to update anymore. It took an act of congress to fix
them. New driver for printer, etc. My Dell is only 5
months old. Why the problems?
