Updates for Word 2002 in Works Suite 2004

I'm getting prompted to download SP3 for Office XP (and also SP3 for Office
2003 - even more confusing), which I don't have except for Word 2002 which
came with the Works Suite 2004. Am I supposed to download SP3 for Office XP
anyway? I won't have the Office XP CD when I'm asked for it. I tried
searching for downloads for Word 2002. I was given 100 results, many of which
weren't even for Word let alone v. 2002. None of them was SP3. Microsoft sure
doesn't make this easy. What should I do?

MS Word 2002 is part of the MS Office XP(2002) family of
updates. It shares core files with the full Office suite
and they apply to individual apps such as Word as well.

You should only be prompted for 2002/XP series CDs for
products listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control
Panel. There are some focused updates for the individual
Office apps but a Service Pack will be at the full Office
Suite level.

I know that Word 2002 is part of Office XP. My question is, "Should I
download and install the SP3 for Office XP in order to update Word 2002?" If
not, what is the alternative?

As mentioned, the Service Pack covers all Office XP
suites and all Office XP family (2002) individual apps.
There is no separate update for Word 2002 that contains
that update.

Dear Bob Buckland . . . Unlike the correspondent, I have Word 2002 as part of
Works Suite 2002, which was bundled on my Dell 8200 in 1/02. But like
him/her, I was prompted, when I scanned for possible updates, to download the
service pack. I understand from your responses that I would have to download
the entire service pack, even though Word is the ONLY Office program on my
computer. So the question is: Since the service pack is such a large
download, and since it contains updates to Office components I do not have,
how can I get rid of all those non-Word updates?

The download will only update the core Office files
(included with Office XP and/or Word 2002) and Word
specific files.

If you're in the U.S. you can order a CD of the update
from Microsoft through this page.
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/updates/xp/Oxpsp3cd.htm

If you're outside of the U.S./Canada you may want to
contact the local MS subsidiary for the availability of
updates on CD.

Based on your rapid response (thank you!!), my understanding is that when I
click on the Download button, only certain files in the service pack will be
downloaded, NOT the files that would update the non-Word files, but only the
files that would update Word. Thus, I would not be downloading the entire
service pack and (also thus) I would not have to delete those
non-Word-updating files. Am I correct in my understanding?

I should note that you also said, "The download will only update the core
Office files (included with Office XP and/or Word 2002)." But, since I do NOT
have Office and any "core Office files," it would seem to me that those "core
Office files" would also be unnecessary. Please clarify. Many thanks!

BTW, I AM in the US, and believe that I CAN download that Service Pack from
the Office pages, so the CD would not be needed.

Hi Basingstoke,

The full Service Pack will download, only those parts
that apply to your installation will install. The size
of the files that pertain only to Word within the
Service Pack isn't that different from 'the whole thing'.

In order for Word to function it requires and you do have
the 'core' Office XP files.
