Updates KB 917148 and KB 916521 will not install

They seemed to have downloaded just fine (auto download), but when they begin
to install, I get error messages stating that they would not install. I am
not sure what is causing this. There is no info about this issue on the info
pages for these updates. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should do
to fix/circumvent this situation?
