Ms. Susan Ramlet,

I was not as clear as I should have been.

I am running XP Pro with SP 2 installed and Office 2003 with SP1 installed,
as confirmed by System Information and/or About Office 2003 under Word, Help
tab All installations were normal and no errors reported. Since Office2003
SP1 is installed the problem is not with SP1 installation but with the
installation of these two updates listed below. Hence your response probably
will not correct the difficulty I am having.

When trying to install either Office 2003 Smart Tags Update (KB885828) or
Office 2003 Junk-E-Mail-Filter Update (KB892236) I get a terse "Installation
Unsuccessful" message. No Error Message numbers are associated this
"Installation Unsuccessful" message.

Installation is unsuccessful whether I attempt installation using Office
Update method or from the applicable "Full File" installation suggested by
the Office Update Troubleshooting response to the "Installation Unsuccessful"
message.

I have not yet tried to Office 2003 French Grammar Checker Update (KB873381)
as I erroneously believed I had never installed non-English grammar checkers.
Scanning posts and replies found here, I do understand that the French
Grammar Checker is installed by default during Office 2003 installation. I
will attempt to install via Office Update and advise on success or failure.

Hi, x_y_z_123,

Thanks for the clarification; however, the article I sent may still help,
because the cause could be the same:

"This issue may occur because the Microsoft Windows Registry is corrupted
and a registry key that provides the path of the original installation
source for the Microsoft Office 2003 program is missing. Or, some
third-party programs that modify the Microsoft Windows Registry removed the
registry keys that are required by the Office 2003 Setup program. "

Most patches require access to the intsallation source--SR-1 as well as
other patches.

The other helpful item in that article is the use of log files to
troubleshoot Office patches, so you might try that, as well.

None of it may be relevant, but it doesn't hurt to check into it.

Susan,

I am abit confused with the procedures for KB884928.

What I find in my registry under the article specified download_code subkey,
(BTW the code on my registry is identical and one one exists) are three more
subkeys Properties, Resources, and Sources. The Properties and Resource keys
have a lot of other subkeys. Sources has but one subkey which is the same
download_code subkey to "\Downloads", at least the name is indential to key
above it.

In Sources/Download_Code, I have Values, Default = (not set), Type String,
Priority = 0x00000000 (0), Type DWord, and Path = "Y:\", Type String, which
is the path to my systems CD Drive.

So as I read KB882498, it would seems that I will be adding another Path
String Value which will be the same as the Path Value currently there. This
seems novel.

Before doing this I thought I would check with you as to the intent of the
article.

If you suggest pressing, I will. Yes, I will Backup the registry using
Backup and System State for the appliacble drives.

Hi, Sir 123;

Since your Registry seems to already contain the information, but
perhaps in a duplicated or incomplete state, it may help to use the MS
Office LIS Tool to establish the exact location of your Office
installation source files.

You can read about it here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555203 and here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011402361033.aspx

and download it from here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/7/b/b7b7d0e1-f125-46ed-9d65-95350e8d3f96/LISTool.exe

HTH :)

Sky ans Susan,

Since from your replies, I thought you were implying the either registry was
corrupt or was incomplete. I am hesitate to "correct" the registry even when
backed up, as I am a nugget. So before tackling that, the LIS option, or the
removal of Office 2003, "cleaning" the registry of Office data, and
reinstalling Office 2003. I thought I would try a "repair".

From Add/Remove CPL, I "repaired" Office 2003 Pro. The routine found a
missing/corrupt cab file. As prompted, I put the install CD into "Y:\", tmy
system CD Drive, and the routine continued to completion. I rebooted, then
tried to install the updates, French grammar, Smartags, and Junk Email Filter
from Office Update. All functioned normally and the Updates were completed.

Not certain as to what the solution really was, but the birth of baby was
great as Updates took.

Thank you for your assistance.
