updates should not require the original CD so often

M

Manxman

I purchased a new computer, replacing an old one. I installed Office 2000
and then went to the Microsoft site to get all the updates.

Due to requirements of the resulting downloads, I was prompted 3 times (and,
of course, 2 CDs each time) to put my CDs in the drive.

I found it very inconvenient to have to use the CD so often. Can you make
it so that I only have to prove it once?

It is not asking you to "prove" anything but it is checked file versions to
see what is required for the installation.

After a lot of head-scratching, Manxman asked:

Milly:

thank you for the reply. If it is just checking file versions, why not
just use the ones that have been installed to my hard drive?

Whatever the reason for the CD, it is just plain inconvenient to have to put
it in 3 times in the same overall session. The way the updates worked, I had
to do 3 separate passes. And, because Office 2000 requires 2 CDs, that
compounds the issue. The first pass could have made a small database of the
info required for passes 2 and 3.
