I installed several upgrades to my early version of Word,
ending with 10.1.5. However, the "about" and "get info"
windows indicate that the old version is still running. The
downloads were labeled as versions of "Office", while I use
Word (word processing only), so maybe there's something
else I need to do to make sure the latest upgrade is the
version that's actually running. What should I be looking
for, for example to put in the dock to replace the old
version of Word?

This is a famous piece of slackness.
When you have all the Office v.X updates in place, get info in the
finder for Word shows version: 10.1.4 (030701)
and the about box in Word says: Microsoft® Word X for Mac® Service
Release 1.

It *might* be because the last Office release contained no Word
specific changes, but the about box text is unforgiveably out of date.

There should have been a proper way of seeing whether your updates have
'taken'.
