No, you have to purchase the full version. Because you've used it for
several months I doubt anyone would exchange it for you. You can legally
sell it when you remove it from your computer.

Right now the Special Media Edition is cheaper than the Standard. $214.99

Standard: $229.99

Upgrade if you have Office 2004 or Office X: $188.00

Requires you to have the CD or have older version installed in order to
install from an upgrade CD.

If you buy from eBay be sure you get a sealed copy. Lots of pirated copies
getting sold and now their keys are blocked.

AFAIK you should be able to qualify for upgrade pricing although I'd check
with MS customer support to confirm that.

But the bigger question is "Why would you want to?"

The programs are absolutely no different. There is no such thing as "full
version" as opposed to something "less than full". The distinction between
the 3 "editions" is a matter of what comes *along with* Word, Excel,
PowerPoint & Entourage. The only things you'll gain are Exchange support [Do
you need that?] & Automator Actions [which you can create or obtain
elsewhere]. The only reason I can see is if you have an impending need to do
professional/commercial work not allowed by the Home & Student Edition EULA.

If none of those needs exist I'd suggest holding off until the next release
rather than paying the upgrade price *now* & paying to upgrade again later.

All, thanks for your replies.

Let me make few more comments to make it clear of my problem.

Firstly I am based in Malaysia, I own a Macbook Air, and I bought Office 2008 Home Edition.

I need to have MS Exchange Server Support in order to connect to work's exchange server.

My initial purchase of all above was few months ago.

MS has Office 2008 for Mac Home, Office 2008 for Mac and Office 2008 for Mac Special Edition.

What I need is to able to upgrade from Office 2008 for Mac Home to Office 2008 for Mac, in order to use exchange etc...

I am willing to pay the upgrade price, however not sure if I download the upgrade, if I would be eligible to use Office 2008 for Mac Home as my eligibility for the upgrade??

I'm assuming the rest of the office uses Outlook? What if you got a
virtual machine (like VMware Fusion) and ran Windows (XP or Vista or
Windows 7), and then run Office with Outlook in that. That would give
you your Exchange connectivity and perhaps retain your integration with
the office. The office may well pay for this or have it to give you?

While I don't connect to an Exchange Server, this is the setup I run
(with the addition of Linux also as an operating system installed in
VMware). When running VMware's "unity" mode each Windows application
runs inside what looks to be it's own Mac window. Works well.

You can't upgrade from the Home edition to either the standard or special
media edition.

Just like if you wanted to upgrade from Standard to Special Media.... There
is no upgrade path.

Hi Diane;

You can't upgrade from the Home edition to either the standard or special
media edition.

Why not? You can upgrade from an earlier student version to either of the 2,
so I don't see any reason why a user would be prohibited from putting more
cash in the coffer & go from H/S to one of the other editions. I don't mean
to challenge you on this but has it been confirmed? I realize that 2008
isn't listed on the Mactopia "eligible upgrade" list, but I'd tend to
believe that's due to either oversight or a conscious decision that "it
wasn't going to come up" :) I still think it's worth checking with MS.

Hi Paul;

If you need Exchange support you have no alternative, but I'm still not
convinced you can't do it with the upgrade rather than outright full
purchase of one of those versions that offer it. I'll make an inquiry but
you'll probably get faster response if you contact MS directly.

Assuming you are eligible, however, upgrades aren't available for download
which is contracted through Digital River - it's only the full version
package(s) that are being distributed that way. Even if you wind up having
to purchase the full retail package & "price is no object" I'd suggest you
order the boxed version rather than the d/l anyway unless you have no other
means of installing on the Air.

Well, it looks like I was wrong... Again :-}

Apparently the H/S 2008 can't be used to upgrade to the other 2008 editions.

I still have a feeler out for other options but have no idea what they may
be or if they even exist. I'll reply when I have something more definite, so
if you aren't "under the gun" check back periodically.

I am still in a limbo land, however with Leopard coming out, going to try the built in exchange support with iMail..if this works then might ignore MS entourage and go with Apple Mail...should know by next week.
