Upgrade from Office 2000 to 2003

S

suz4596

We have Office 2000 Small Business on our home computer. At school they are
using Office 2003 Professional. I want to upgrade what we have at home so
it's easier for my daughter to transition from what she does at school to the
computer here at home. What are my options, do I have to purchase the Pro
edition or can I purchase the Academic version or the Student version? Thanks

JoAnn Paules

You cannot purchase an academic student unless you are a qualified
purchaser. As it is, you may find it difficult to find a 2003 version now
that 2007 is the latest. To get the best match, try to find the Office Pro
2003 upgrade.

The Office 2000 that is on our Gateway came with the system when we purchased
it, can I still buy just the upgrade for Office Pro 2003?

If you can find it, yes. And do yourself a HUGE favor - DO NOT LOSE THAT
OFFICE 2000 CD. (I'm not yelling - I'm strongly emphasizing the need to know
exactly where that disk is because without it, you will be up a famous creek
without a paddle. You can upgrade and upgrade and upgrade and each time you
need to prove that something "way back when" you had a full version.)

tHANKS FOR YOUR HELP - I do have the 2 disks for Microsoft Office 2000 -
Small Business. To upgrade will I need any type of registration numbers from
these old disks? If I do I have no idea where to find them. I looked through
all the paper work from Gateway and it doesn't have anything about the
specific program. Suzi

You shouldn't. The product key would be nice but that's on a sticker on the
CD sleeve your disks came in originally. If you can find that, keep it handy
as well. There are programs that can find the product key for Office XP and
up but not 2000. Microsoft can't help you with OEM software and Gateway
won't help with a product key, especially one from that far back.

You have been so incredibly helpful. Since I don't have the product key for
2000, would you still suggest I go with the upgrade for 2003 Pro or should I
buy the whole program? You can probably tell from my questions that this is
not ny area of expertise!

You would probably be okay with the upgrade but Murphy's Law says that
something is going to happen that requires you to use that product key. (I
don't know what but "stuff happens".)

*If* it's within your budget, get the full version of Office - and make sure
you know where that key is. If you do opt for that, get it from Amazon.com.
Might as well save a few dollars on your purchase. They frequently offer
free shipping, which is very nice.

Also, make sure you check out the various editions of Office so that you get
what you need. Why pay for products you have no need for?

Yes, the academic version is only available to qualified students at the institution where this suite is sold. If you mean the Student and Teacher version, it is only for non-commercial use.

Now I'm a little confused - I want to replace Office 2000, Small Business
with 2003 Pro for my daughter at home, which is what they use at her school.
Is the academic version and the student/teacher version the same as the
"regular" 2003? There is a large price difference between all three, but I
want to purchase the one that will be the same as the Office 2003
Professional that is on the computers at her school. Thanks, Suzi

You will need to get the Office Professional then - or have your daughter bring home the CD she used to install at school. Student and Teacher Edition is Office Standard re-branded to allow for additional installations. Office Professional has additional programs in the suite that do not come with Office Standard/Student Teacher's Edition.

|||||||| You would probably be okay with the upgrade but Murphy's Law
|||||||| says that something is going to happen that requires you to

||||||||
|||||||| *If* it's within your budget, get the full version of Office -
|||||||| and make sure you know where that key is. If you do opt for
|||||||| that, get it from Amazon.com. Might as well save a few dollars
|||||||| on your purchase. They frequently offer free shipping, which is

||||||||
|||||||| Also, make sure you check out the various editions of Office so
|||||||| that you get what you need. Why pay for products you have no
|||||||| need for?

|||||||||| You shouldn't. The product key would be nice but that's on a
