Upgrade or Full program`

I currently use Microsoft Suite which includes Word 2000
on my PC. I am thinking about buying an Apple laptop. I
am told that I can make the PC and Apple laptop compatable
by installing installing Word 2001 for Macintosh on the
laptop. The price for the program is $229. An upgrade is
$109. Am I qualified to use the upgrade relying on the
Word 2000 in my PC?

Unfortunately, no, you won't qualify for upgrade pricing. I know a couple of
people who were disappointed when they misunderstood Microsoft's own website
and bought Mac upgrade versions of Office, then discovered they wouldn't
work. Fortunately, they were able to exchange them, but it was a hassle and
they were very upset. You must get a full Mac version.

Consult Microsoft's upgrade grid:

For anyone still following this thread, it turns out that the URL Neill
cited has the correct information. If you read carefully, you'll notice
that you CAN upgrade cross-platform from Windows to Office/Word 2001 but NOT
from Windows to Office/Word X. So, Nate, you're okay for the $109 upgrade
to Word 2001. (And having Word 2001 will make you eligible for the upgrade
price for Word X if you decide you want it.)
