Upgrade Problems

I recently upgraded from Office X to Office 2004. Since that time, I've
had several problems with Word 2004:
- The font "symbol" no longer works - but continues to do so in other
programs.
- Any time a footnote is inserted, or a document with a footnote is
opened, Word crashes.

Any ideas?
I'm running OS 10.3.9

Thanks!

1) The Symbol font, or use of it, did undergo some changes between Office X
and Office 2004, since Office 2004 can now use most Unicode characters via
the OS X Character Palette, and the Symbol font is often not as necessary.
However, you don't say what "no longer works" actually means to you. If you
explain the problem more specifically, there may be a remedy. Searching the
group may also offer something, as various reports of problems with the
Symbol font have been posted:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office.word

2) I have no problem with footnotes here in Office 2004 (11.1.1) OS 10.3.9.
But consistent and reproducible problems in Word, like the one you describe
with footnotes, usually respond to one of the standard troubleshooting
measures, which you will find listed here:

http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Work through them one by one until something helps. If nothing does, post
back. Alternatively, test it in a new user account. If the new account
works, switching over may be quicker. If the footnote problem is limited to
a certain document, see the Document Corruption link.

Hope that helps,

[I think a server swallowed my earlier reply, sorry for the duplicate if not
so on your machine]
