Upgrade Product Problems

Hello everyone:

Here's my problem. We originally purchased FrontPage 95 years ago on Floppy
Disk (full product). After that, we purchased the UPGRADE to FrontPage 98
on CD. The FP 98 install to a new hard drive in my computer requires either
the installation of FP 95, or the presence of the 1st floppy disk. The
problem is that the 1st floppy disk seems to have something wrong with it
and we had a lot of trouble getting things installed this time around. I'm
going to be upgrading my operating system and/or whole computer soon, and
that will require fresh installs of everything again. We also plan to
upgrade FrontPage again in the future -- how do we work around the bad disk
? And, what happens if my next computer doesn't HAVE a floppy drive ? The
"recognize" process during the FP install didn't like to have the disk files
copied onto a CD, etc. from the floppy.

Any assistance or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Colleen Akerman

The first thing I would do is to make a backup of that bad floppy. It may be
a PITA but a copy of the floppy should work as well as the orginal.

As for your next computer possibly not having a floppy, you might want to
consider adding one. Let's face it, we're only talking about $20 fon a BTO
(build to order) system or maybe $50 if you buy one and install it yourself.
As for me - I'm keeping my floppy drive. I may not use it much but I do
still use floppies now and then.

Yes, I plan to make copies of all of the floppies -- but that still might
not help me if the copy is bad, too. Will MS replace anything like that for
owners ?

Not on an old version. Keep your fingers crossed that there is something
physically glitchy about the floppy. Try it now and see what happens -
nothing ventured, nothing gained.

If you upgrade FP, then you will only need to have the FP98 CD available.

You may have a problem making a copy of the 1st floppy disk - MSFT often
uses a High Density (DMF) format which squeezes up to 1.64 Mbytes onto a
floppy disc (normal capacity 1.38 Mbytes).

As far as the next upgrade to FP is concerned, the FP98 CD is all that is
required, FP 98 does not need to be installed, though FP95 does need to be
retained, being the full product.

In addition to JL Andersons recommendations for a floppy drive, consider a
USB version. Low cost, and easy to install.

Please confirm that what you mean is:

If I purchase an upgrade to FP 2003 and get a new computer;

I will only need the FP 98 Upgrade CD as "proof" to install the FP 2003 onto
the new computer ? I won't need the floppies at all, or to have previously
installed FP 98 ???

Thanks, Colleen
