UPGRADE QUESTION

IHAVEAQUESTION

I have Office 2003 Prof. Edition looking to upgrade to new 2007 edition.
What do I need in order to upgrade? I'm not sure if I can locate my cd. Can
I find all the information I need on my PC? If not and I do find the 2003
cd, what do I need from it for the upgrade? Just looking to save myself a
$100 so as not to have to purchase full version.

Possibly not if Office 2003 is still installed and working. But on the
other hand there is the eventual system crash resulting in a total system
rebuild. What is he going to do then?

What the upgrade is looking for, is proof of ownership of a competing
product. A valid 2003 installation could be that, or the CD. It doesn't
actually need files from the CD though.

IHAVEAQUESTION

Ok, never mind. I can't find the disk. I've dug through my entire cd
library and it's nowhere. So here's my question. If I purchase the full
version, do I need to completely remove the current version first or will it
prompt me to do so.
Biggest Question - WILL ALL MY CURRENT FILES BE DELETED?? HOW DO I GO ABOUT
BACKING UP ALL MY WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK (EMAILS/CONTACT), ACCESS, ETC FILES.
IS THERE AN EASY WAY OF DOING THIS. HOW DIFFICULT IS IT GOING TO BE TO
RE-INSTALL THEM...IF THIS IS THE CASE?
THANKS

Theres no need to shout, which is what all caps means.

Whether your upgrading or whatever, you should be backing up data, otherwise
what happens when your hard drive fails?
Niether an upgrade or an uninstall has any impact on data files
An upgrade will offer you the option to upgrade your current installation.
It depends which full version you purchase as to whether it includes Outlook
& Access, not all do.

There are many backup applications to choose from, there are also external
hard drives that include backup software.
As it is if you dont have the default win backup program installed, all you
need do is copy your data to some location / media.

Sorry,
Didn't mean to shout...was more like an OMG what am I going to do!
I do keep my created word, excel, etc files backed up on a stick, IBook and
a third external drive (no, I'm not crazy...I work from home and can't be too
careful).
I'm just wondering if I purchase the FULL VERSION how it works..exactly.
I'm purchasing the 2007 version of Office Prof which includes all the same
programs as 2003 other than Outlook Business Contact Manager which is offered
in 2007 vs. I just don't know how much I have to "back-up". I'm assuming
that "templates" will be deleted so I would need to back any altered or
created. Not to sound completely computer illiterate, but I'm assuming if I
have a doc. file sitting on my desktop that it won't magically disappear
after the install? As far as outlook and current emails in my inbox, do I
just archive them? I'm just afraid of performing the install and then
saying...oops, I think I may have forgotten something???? Thanks everyone for
your help - JEN

Archiveing Outlook data is not a backup, when you archive you merely move
data of a certain modified date from your default outlook data file to an
archive data file.
To backup outlook data, with outlook closed, your merely copy the data files
to some location.
Templates should be located in the Office Template folder.
Data will not magically dissapear, but as for anything PC related data
should be backed up.
IMO its unwise to store data on the desktop.
Many people locate all their data files, including outlook data files, in
the My Documents folder, that way they only need to worry about backing up a
single Folder/subset

As far as the upgrade using the "Full Version", do I need to uninstall the
current office edition prior to loading the full version or will it
automatically override it? I just don't want duplicate applications...if
that's even possible...
Again, thanks for all your help!

Duplicate applications are indeed possible
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928091

It's not "recommended" but it is possible. The last time I upgraded an
Office installation I remember getting the choice to keep the old
applications in place or to delete them. Make sure to delete the old
versions if that is what you want.

As far as I know, you won't need the Full Version if you leave your copy of
Office 2003 in place for the compliance checking code to inspect it. I
can't find a KB article that addresses it directly, but I am pretty sure
that the installer looks in %programfiles%\Microsoft Office for a qualifying
upgrade. If it finds it, then you get to use the cheaper Upgrade Version.
If you delete the old version before installing then this fails and you have
to have the Full Version.

The 2007 installation will offer the option of upgrading your existing
installation, so you wont have any duplicate components.
If however your origonal installation has components not included in your
new version, these 'old' components will not be removed.
