Upgrade to 12.0.1 fails even though software is on the volume

You cannot install Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume.

Does anyone know why this would be happening? I have office installed and it works fine, but I can't install this upgrade.

Thanks, Fiona.

Is Office in /Applications or did you move it to another location??

Its in Applications, I didn't move anything. Just did the normal install.

Then it "shouldn't" have failed (though it should be able to find it on
other locations, but I had to ask to try to narrow things down).

I wonder then:
- if you reboot, can you install then??
- did you touch or delete anything in /Library/Receipts? Any receipt
with "incremental" in its name there?

I've got the same error - I tried AutoUpdate AND the standalone
installer. I opened the package from the downloaded installer and
double clicked the "Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.pkg" in the
"Packages" folder and that gave me the following error: "Microsoft
Office 2008 for Mac requires Mac OS X version 10.4.9 or later." Well,
I'm running 10.5.2 at the moment, so how 'later' can it get? I think
that's the cause of the installer not wanting to install. Microsoft -
what about it?

And everything is fine??
(I played around with Pacifist as I was trying to clean up the mess on
my own drive and I must have selected the wrong option at some point as
I got things even much worse :-> )

I had to do some manual moving of files from a temporary folder that
was created. It ultimately opened, but after a little use, I realized
that it had stability issues. I re-installed off the DVD and then the
update applied fine. M$ just uses very poor scripting when searching
for an existing installation.

I am another one of these with the same issue.

I tried Pacifist, but it does not seem to help. Other suggestions?

thanks!

I'm going insane. Just got a new computer and am having these same
issues...the installer doesn't recognize the applications. :( I don't
want to touch Pacifist if there may be bugs...

I AM ALSO A VICTIM. A bit comforting that I am not going insane alone. I have tried everything suggested so far. I will wait for a smart person to help us - since Microsoft won't. Thanks guys.

Pacifist will install the update without running any of the validation
cehcks or anything. If the applciation is in /Application, you should be
fine.
The problems with the isntaller *should* have been fixed by now and MS
silently released an updatd version of the installer. You might want to
re-download it from their site.
If it still doesn't work, the only known workaround is to uninstall
throughthe uninstaller, then re-install and re-update,

I have the same problem. I cannot install the upgrade 12.0.1. I just bought the new version 2008, and tried to upgrade it, but it is written that A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume. (as it was posted)

Could it be related with language issues? I have a German keyboard/Mac but running a English version of Office 2008. (just a try)

thanks

Not understandable...

I just tried again to install the upgrade (now the 6th time or so) and now suddenly it's working!
I don't know how or why, but now it is ok.

One difference I recognized, the estimated needed memory for the installation changed from a few KB to much more (cannot remember the exact number).

thanks anyway...

Marcel
