I have Office 2008 Home edition. I would like to upgrade to Standard edition so I can learn about and make use of Exchange Server.

Is it possible to upgrade or do I have to buy the software again?

Thanks in advance.

You cannot upgrade. Sorry! If it's a recent purchase, you might be able to
get a refund from Microsoft.

Microsoft will honor returns through the retailer where you purchased the
product or by contacting Microsoft directly:

I wouldn't bet on this being a quick process.

I don't mean to be a dummy but I want to make sure I have this right. I recently bought a copy of the Special Media Edition upgrade in order to go from Home edition to full functionality. I have tried three times to upgrade with zero success which is why I'm looking at this thread. Do I understand that the upgrade won't work and that I should find a way to return it? If that's the case, pray tell what it's an upgrade for? I read everything I could about the upgrade and completely missed this rather important clue.

No version of Office 2008 can upgrade any other version of Office 2008.
The Office 2008 Upgrade will only upgrade Office 2004 or earlier.

If you purchased a Office 2008 Special Media Edition to upgrade Office
2008 Home & Student then you need to contact your vendor to see if you
can return both products for the full version of Office 2008 Special
Media Edition. (See Diane's response in this thread for returning products.)

Hope this helps!

An upgrade Office CD looks for the previous version before it will continue.
It's looking for the full version of Office 2004 or Office X.

You really don't need the Media edition. The Standard edition will give you
full functionality.

See this page for more on the confusion over upgrades and updates.
