Upgraded network, cannot send email through Entourage

T

T Flynn

I just upgraded my cable modem and router for a PC based network.

On my eMac, I can connect to the Internet and receive email through
Entourage but I cannot send email through Entourage.

I was able to send email before I upgraded. Any ideas?

The SMTP port might be blocked on the router...
This page:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106439
will tell you what ports are used for what. Depeding on whether you use
SMTP or SMTP over SSL, you need to make sure port 25 or 465 (or whatever
port your SMTP server requires).

Merci de votre poteau, Corentin.

I have experienced a similar problem to T Flynn but only when
travelling and only with some of the ISPs that certain hotels use for
their internet access.

I can receive email but when I send, I receive an error message that
the server does not support secure connections. Based on your response
above, I looked at the account settings for my POP account.

After specifying the SMTP server under "Sending mail", there is an
optional "bar" you can click <Click here for advance sending options>

There are a series of check boxes.

I have checked (per my home institution's IT group's instructions):

1. "SMTP server requires secure conection (SSL)" ==>> (unchecking that
does not solve the problem and generates a new and different error
message)

2. "SMTP server requires authentication" ==>> (unchecking that does not
solve the problem and generates a new and different error message).

There is an additional box and option that I do not have checked:
"Override default SMTP port". Currently the default port in this
unchecked option is "25", the port listed on the link you listed.

Question: would checking this box to override the default SMTP server
solve the problem I describe? No one at these hotel ISP support lines
had a clue what to do.

Thanks in advance.

:-D Very good Tom :) post=poteau (poteau is indeed a post, but more
like a telegraphic post in French).

That's fairly common. They block some ports.

Though very often, hotels will allow SMTP over SSL (which uses a
different port as regular SMTP). The problem is that some SMTPs don;t
support SSL :-\ (hence the new warning probably)
2. "SMTP server requires authentication" ==>> (unchecking that does not
solve the problem and generates a new and different error message).

THat probably means that port 587 is also blocked :-\ (587 is usually
used for authenticated SMTP

There is an additional box and option that I do not have checked:
"Override default SMTP port". Currently the default port in this
unchecked option is "25", the port listed on the link you listed.

This is only useful if your SMTP actually uses a non standard port (and
in this case, in general, you don't have a choice: you HAVE to use this
option otherwise it never works).

I usually manage to workaround this problem by using an SMTP over SSL.
Two of my e-mail accounts come with an SMTP server that accepts that. In
these situations, I simply cannot send through any of my other accounts
since their SMTPs don't support SSL.

Corentin,

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

....and my spoken French is even worse...(-;

I guess a telephone "post" really isn't to far off when we are talking
about internet communication...(-:

Last question: in regards to
"I usually manage to workaround this problem by using an SMTP over SSL.

Not sure I understand. I also have a personal email account and private
ISP (email problems above relate to my work email system). Assuming my
private ISP allows SMTP over SSL, how would that help me get my email
from my work server? (really showing my ignorance here...).

Well, let me try to explain.
Entourage (or any other mail client) will use different port depending
on the method used by your mail server for authentication.
- Regular is 25
- authenticated is 587 (usually. or whatever your ISP tells you)
- and SMTP over SSL is 425 (not sure about this one, though).

What matters is what is supported by your SMTP and what's allowed by the
ISP you are using.

If port 25 is blocked on your network and you want to use a remote (home
ISP, work...) SMTP you can try the other two methods.
You can configure Entourage to only use SMTP over SSL for instance to
make sure your mail is sent through port 425 (that migh not be blocked)
instead of 25.

Is that better ??

Yes, thank you for the follow up.

I am relatively new to this Group but have learned more about using and
troubleshooting Entourage from reading your and other MVP posts during
the last week than I had in the prior 2.5 years of using Entourage and
the Entourage Help menu.

Kudos.

:-D
I guess that the Help has a lot to offer, but newsgroups are more
interactive ;-)
