Upgraded to Word 2003, automatic numbering being removed from documents

Hey all,

We just upgrdaded from Office 2000 to 2003 in the last couple of weeks.
I have a redlined document that loses it's automatic numbering after I
accept all changes in the document, save the document as something new
(to preserve original), close, then reopen the document. The majority
of my automatic numbering disappears when you reopen the document,
there are still a few paragraphs that retain their numbering. Any idea
what could cause this, or what I should check for? Any new options in
Word 2003 that would cause this to happen?

I thought they may have been removed with accept all changes, but they
are not showing up as redlined, deleted, added, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

In Tools | Templates and Add-Ins, is the option to "Automatically
update document styles" checked? If it is, clear it, and save the
document. Then re-create the numbering as described at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

Note that for the save operation to be successfull, you probably have
to make a modification, such as adding and deleting a space;
otherwise, Word doesn't recognize the document as being modified (and
the check mark will be back the next time you open the file).

If the above doesn't work, the document could be corrupt. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/CorruptDoc.htm.
