I have just bought a new computer with windows XP installed. I have tried to
load my old MSO 97 from CD but I receive a message saying that XP cannott
load the files because they are 16bit. What can I do. I have tried the XP
compatabilty wizard but nothing happens.

Office 97 does work with Windows XP. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324767 "Error message when you
install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program". If your
new computer has Windows XP with Service Pack 2, you will probably have
to perform a custom installation of Office 97 in which you set the Web
Authoring Tools (HTML) to "not available" in the setup options.

Garfield,
Thank you for your response. In between posting my problem and your reply I
accidently stumbled across a solution. I went to Google typed in
"C:\windows\system32\autoexec_nt" and it took me to a site which offered a
splendid little fix. Please do not ask me the name of the site because
everything happened so quickly, it was a bit of a risk as the file/site was
not certificated. So I downloaded and saved and then scaned the file. It
appears that it does not permanently install the file, because when I
rebooted I had a similar problem with another programme but I used the file
again and all went well. If you want more detail please let me know and I
will try and track the source for you or for any body else who has the same
problem. As I real novice I am quite chuffed that I managed to resolve the
problem on my own, plus the help of the small organisation the internet.
Thank you again, please let me know if you need any more info.
