Upgrades to 2 computers

oakridge

Had Office Pro - original disc. When I purchsed a laptop a few years ago MS
would not let me install the program on the second computer - even though it
should have - even though I contacted them. Had to purchase program new for
laptop. Now I have a new desktop - computer #3 - trial version of 07 has
expired, right in the middle of a project. No problem buying new version --
however, I'm concerned I'll have the same problem installing on desktop and
laptop if I download -- and must have it on the laptop as I'll be traveling
soon and will need it.

Is there any secret to installing download on two computers? Is there any
advantage to purchasing the program locally rather than download, ie original
disc and manual?

Thanks so much! I haven't had any luck getting a response from MS on this>

The obvious advatnage to buying the disc is that you have it to reinstall if
necessary.

You cannot install Office Pro on 3 systems so you need another copy of
Office.

While you need to read the EULA for specifics the rule summery of Office
Professional is that if Office Professional is purchased OEM {pre-installed}
then it can only be installed in the original computer. Suspect this is the
case for your first copy. If your second Office Professional was a retail
purchase it can be installed on one desktop and one portable device for your
sole use, but not at the same time. Since you state that the copy you
purchased for your laptop is only installed on the laptop and if it was a
retail purchase, you should be able to install on your new desktop after
you uninstall the Office 2007 trial version. Unistalling the trial version
should not delete the data files you have created with trial version. Still
a good idea to backup the data files.

Many file formats were changed for Office 2007. If you install a prior
version of Office on your new desktop, you will need to download and install
a free file converter program from Microsoft. If you choose to upgrade to
Office 2007 Profession for both your second laptop and your new desktop, you
could use the Office Profession disc you purchased for your laptop
{assuming it is a qualifying product} for installation on your new desktop
without installing Office {again after you uninstall the trial version}. For
the laptop with Office installed {assuming it is a qualifying version}, the
installation would qualify.

Information on qualifing products for Office 2007 Upgrade is available here:

You likely find a lower cost for Office 2007 Professional Upgrade from
sellers like Amazon.com, Staples etc than by following the "buy now" link
provided by Microsoft.

Thank you, I think both of you, Joanne and Don are right. I purchased all my
copies and two copies of 2003 :) none were preinstalled but I see the
difference in Office Pro now. I ran up to Best Buy and read the boxes -
purchased the Home version as it met my needs better these days, don't need
quite all that Pro offers and I really wanted One Note. Price was the same
- I don't have time to order online - and it says it can be installed on 3
computers.

The only limitation that might impact you with Home and Student is that it cannot be used for commercial usage, including non-profit work.
